Become a Friend of Salmon Creek: A Living Experiment in Art, Ecology, and Community
Tucked away on the Mendocino Coast, where redwoods meet the sea, on 33 acres of coastal redwood habitat of Central Pomo land, Salmon Creek Arts (SCA) has quietly become one of the most vibrant and vital artist sanctuaries in the world. Nearly 2,000 have journeyed down our winding path since 2014 - not just to make work, but to live in a way that reconnects them to the land, to each other, and to the deeper purpose of their creative practice. Today, we invite you to be part of our next chapter.
Originally founded as a counterculture commune in 1971, Salmon Creek Farm has been lovingly restored and reimagined as a long term living art project shaped by many hands. Under the leadership of artist and founder Fritz Haeg, and with the guidance of an expansive board and advisory council, SCA has cultivated an inclusive and experimental haven - especially for queer, BIPOC, and underrepresented artists - offering something increasingly rare: a rural space that feels both deeply grounded and radically welcoming.
In just three short years as a 501(c)(3), SCA has already:
- Hosted over 150 artists annually through immersive residencies, thematic retreats, and intensive workshops.
- Launched Schools of Salmon Creek, our flagship two month artist-led program blending land-based learning, collective living, and experimental practice.
- Collaborated with partners like Cider Creek Collective and Mendocino Art Center to expand our reach and community engagement.
- Supported emerging and established artists whose work has gone on to major institutions, publications, and global exhibitions.
- Published artist-initiated editions, newsletters, monographs, and community storytelling projects that extend the work beyond the land.
Why Give Now?
After a decade of foundational work - restoring infrastructure, piloting programs, and building community - SCA is at a catalytic moment. We’ve secured significant multi-year funding from organizations like the Rauschenberg Foundation, and demand for our programs has never been greater, with hundreds applying for each open call. But to meet this moment, we need your support. Your gift today will directly fund:
- Artist honoraria and travel support for those who might not otherwise access a rural residency.
- Facilitators and guest artists who lead cross-disciplinary workshops in land practices, crafts, performance, and food culture.
- Expanded programming staff and mentorship to sustain Schools of Salmon Creek and deepen artist-community collaborations.
- Public exhibitions and publications that share the transformative work created here with broader audiences.
- Every dollar helps us continue to break down barriers, center underrepresented voices, and offer artists the time and space to think expansively and connect with land.
Join Us
We’re not just growing programs - we’re catalyzing a movement rooted in care, reciprocity, and the belief that artists are essential stewards of cultural and ecological futures. As a Friend of Salmon Creek you provide critical support that ensures this unique community survives and thrives.
With gratitude,
Fritz Haeg, Founding Director, Salmon Creek Arts on behalf of the Board of Directors and Community Council
